In the Community

GetAbout has grown from its original single van providing rides for seniors to contribute in many other areas of New Canaan and surrounding communities.

Although most of our riders are seniors needing support for errands or medical appointments, GetAbout is also an essential part of the day for several New Canaan residents with special needs who rely on our drivers to get them to and from work at local businesses every day.

GetAbout strives to upgrade our fleet (currently 8 wheelchair accessible vans) on a regular basis.  Thanks to the generosity of a donor we were able to acquire a new van last year.  With cooperation and financial support from a Stamford community organization, the van that we replaced was renovated and has found a new home with a local family, one of whose children is confined to a wheelchair.

Meals on Wheels provides an essential service to New Canaan, with volunteers delivering hot meals prepared at Waveny Life Care Center kitchen to local residents every day.  During the pandemic not enough volunteer drivers were available.  GetAbout stepped into the situation and added regular delivery routes for Meals on Wheels.  We continue this effort even as the pandemic has abated, supplementing the volunteer drivers.

The May Fair at St. Mark’s Church in New Canaan, one of is the largest outdoor fairs in the state, raises money for the Church’s community outreach and ministry. More than 10,000 people enjoy rides, games, a white elephant sale and food every year. GetAbout helps residents attend by putting on a special Friday and Saturday shuttle service, which also eases congestion around the campus.
