Our Programs
The precursor to GetAbout was formed in 1980 by civic-minded New Canaan residents as “The Friendship Express,” to provide transportation for the elderly and handicapped. In February 1982, the organization became the “GetAbout.”
GetAbout provides more than 10,000 rides annually to New Canaan residents 18 years or older who are unable to drive and has a fleet of seven specially equipped vans to carry wheelchair confined passengers and their aids to activities within New Canaan and to medical appointments in New Canaan and surrounding communities.
The GetAbout team of professional drivers all have Public Passenger driver’s licenses and are trained in providing for the ambulatory needs of all our riders.
Senior Transportation
GetAbout provides transportation within New Canaan to help enrich the lives of our seniors. Our rides are typically used to shop at the pharmacy or grocery store, visit a friend or spouse at Waveny Care Center, attend a program at Lapham senior center, the library or YMCA, or to a scheduled medical appointment.
Handicapped Transportation
GetAbout works hard to meet the transportation needs of those with permanent or temporary physical and/or medical challenges. Our “Medi-Rides Program” represents nearly 40% of all rides and are provided within New Canaan and the neighboring towns of Darien, Norwalk, Stamford, and Wilton. This Program is a life-saver for many, especially for those in our community who are undergoing chemotherapy, radiation or dialysis treatments.
Special Needs Transportation
Life never lets us know in advance of what is around the corner. GetAbout works hard to meet the needs of those 18 years or older who are unable to drive for various reasons. Please give us a call to see if you or a loved one meet the criteria for this service. We are here to help.
